[A-P Originals] Long-ass blogs

I've noticed I suffer from writing excessively long and arguably boring blogs. It makes no sense because when I'm asked to write an essay at school I can't even bring myself to write 250 words while with blogs on this site I tend to go over 500 word mark.

My last blog which is called 'Pokemon vs Digimon' is a great example of my writing problem. It's incredibly long as it is but would you believe that I actually scrapped 1/3 of the blog? I even was considering to split the blog into 2 parts at first…

First things first, I’m not going to argue about which franchise is better and let’s be honest - we all know that Pokémon franchise is more successful and famous than the Digimon one. Instead I’ll simply give my opinion about which anime series I prefer today as I'm older.

In this blog I decided to concentrate more on the first seasons of both shows as I haven't seen all episodes in either of them.

So which anime series are better in my opinion now that I’m older? Easily - Digimon Adventures. I’ve decided to (eventually) re-watch all my childhood anime out of nostalgia. That being said I could only force myself to watch about 30 episodes of Pokemon.  I simply could not bear it longer than that…

With Digimon Adventures I had no problem. Granted, I watched the Japanese version of DA and now I begin to wonder if I’d enjoyed Pokemon more if I had watched Japanese version as well, instead of the dumbed-down 4kids version. However, I doubt it. Keep in mind both anime are targeted at kids and both have that stupid ‘friendship overcomes everything’ crap and both anime suffer from overusing deus ex machine trick just to deliver good ending to the audience. For this sort of anime, it’s best to let your brain rest and simply go with the flow. But there are two issues about Pokemon anime I just couldn’t ignore.

Repetitiveness and constantly re-use of Rocket team gag. 90% of the episodes re-use the same formula over and over again. Ash and his friends arrive somewhere, meet a new character, encounter a stupid ass problem that’s blow out of proportions, Rocket team arrives, talk/sing their stupid introduction, steal a pokemon, Ash & Co. defeat the clown gang, Pickachu use  thundershock, they fly in the air and there’s a shining star as they disappear from sight, Ash says goodbye to the new-met character and repeat the cycle in the next episode. After seeing 30 or so episodes with this crap, I had enough. I understand the anime is targeted at kids but did the creators think that kids are idiots? Even a kid would notice that they re-use the same event over and over again. And we’re talking about anime that has over 700 episodes and God knows how many movies.

I already mentioned in my Digimon Adventures review how much I actually enjoyed the emphasis made on character development and cooperation. The stakes actually seemed higher and villains were more threatening than Pokemon’s. Although, I appreciate Pokemon franchise for what it is (more from game standpoint), there’s just no doubt that Digimon anime has more quality to it. The first season of Digimon had an actual message, chemistry between characters, story development and fascinating villains, while Pokemon just seems to have a lot of jokes. There’s not much about characters, villains are a joke and the worst thing is how redundant the anime get just after few episodes.

I’ve decided to give Pokemon another chance and I’ll try to hunt down the Japanese version but with 700+ episodes, I know that I have no chance of finishing the entire franchise. Knowing how predictable it is I’ll be lucky to finish the first season.

[A-P Originals] AMV of the week #2

You don’t have to read my impressions so just feel free to scroll to the end for the AMV :D

If you don't know what this blog is about then basically each week I post a blog with one of my favourite AMVs (Anime Music Videos) and share my impressions and reason why I like the specific AMV.

Last weeks blog: AMV of the week #1

So if last weeks AMV is the one that made me interested in Death Note and Celldweller then this AMV is the one that made me love them. The music style might not be for everyone but it’s perfect for me. Even if you don’t like the music style you can’t deny one thing: the editing is superb. At the time this AMV blew my mind and in fact it still does. The editing, special effects and timing is perfect. It’s pure eye candy to anyone who’s interested in video editing. In the end an image speaks more than 1000 words so here’s a video for you. And video consists of MANY images :D

Autors: Darius GQ, Boogayman, RatKiller

Song: The Last Firstborn by Celldweller

You don’t have to read my impressions so just feel free to scroll to the end for the AMV :D

I’m bored. Let’s start a new category of blogs: AMV of the week. AMV is short for Anime Music Video. Ask Mother Google if you don’t know what that is. I enjoy watching AMVs and from now on each week on Sunday or Monday I’ll post a blog with one of my favorite AMVs and tell me why I like it or what it means to me personally.

I’ve found many great anime and music thanks to AMVs and I think creators would appreciate more people seeing their work, so everybody wins.

My first AMV is very special. It might not have the most amazing effects as the ones I’ll share with you later on but it holds a lot of sentiment for me. This was the first AMV I watched from beginning to end. I used to hate AMVs as I didn’t like anime in general and I wanted to see official music videos instead of fan-made ones.

I didn’t really hate anime when I saw this specific AMV because I had already finished Devil May Cry and Elfen Lied. However, up until that moment I was fascinated by anime but had not yet accepted it as my hobby.

This video changed my life as in:

1) I found Celldweller which later lead to finding Blue Stahli, RTPN etc. And I sort of switched from straight-up metal and hard rock to little bit more industrial and electro-rock type of music. I had already heard Celldweller in couple places like Need For Speed: Most wanted (video game) but I didn’t consider it to be my style so didn’t really pay any real attention.

2) I found Death Note. Again just like with Celldweller I had heard the name here and there but never paid any attention. Video seemed intriguing so I checked the anime out. Little did I know that Death Note would become one of my favourite anime of all time and it would lead me to step 3.

3) Accepting anime as hobby. Yes, I was one of those who hated anime. However due to my love for video games, I watched Devil May Cry anime which lead to an experiment called Elfen Lied. ‘Intriguing but sick’ I thought at the time and kept avoiding anime until watched Death Note.

Thank you, Dante (a.k.a. skynet2005) for introducing me to Celldweller's music and Death Note!

Reload the page if you can't see the video!

The song used in the AMV is a mash-up between Linkin Park's song 'One Step Closer' and Celldweller's song called 'Frozen'.

[A-P Originals] Redundant ecchi/harem anime clichés

Note: This is an unaltered blog originally written for Anime-Planet. Originally published in December 28th, 2011.
The information/opinions may or may not be outdated and nothing has been edited compared to the original version.
_________________________________________________________________________________

As much as I hate admitting it – I’ve seen plenty of ecchi/harem anime to notice that they all basically reuse the same stuff. Here I list the most frequent/noticeable clichés and my opinion about them.

1) Indecisive (Dumb) protagonist – it’s like an unwritten law that the main protagonist of this genre anime has to be total idiot. Not only majority of time the protagonist is going to be utterly clueless that there are like, oh let’s say 5 different girls that like him but he’ll also have a decisiveness of 5 year-old child. Just pick the one you like the most, imbecile!

2) Beach episode – without an exception all harem anime have this. For some reason there’s always a need to go to the beach. Clearly this is just a way from creators’ side to show off more fan-service just like point 1 was just a way to appease to entire fan-base since different people are going to have different favorite girls.

3) Now that beach is out of way let’s talk about school trips… More often than not there’ll be a school trip that, of course, involves staying overnight. I guarantee 90% of the time there’ll be a ghost story and/or some sort of test of courage that isn’t even remotely scary unless you’re five or anime character.

4) Comic relief best friend who’s also a pervert – it seems that all clueless, oblivious and useless protagonists need a friend that’s way too cheerful and is also a pervert 99.9% of time. These characters are mostly forgettable. Seriously, I wanted to give an example but couldn’t remember any name. Not that it matters.

5) The ‘OMG this is terrible!’ moments or in my case - ‘I don’t give a shit, please move on.’ moments. This is not that easy to explain but more often than not there’ll be something terrifying that’ll happen to one or two of the characters. A girl could get sick, main character and one of the girls get lost in the woods, someone runs away from home, meet a giant fish, feels depressed, yada yada. Characters always blow it out of proportions, there’ll be sad song playing and before you know it, it’s over. It usually happens in span of 1 episode but it also can be a cliffhanger to give an excuse for viewers to watch another sorry-ass episode.

6) Crappy ending - this pisses me off the most. You know what I like? A feeling of progress. Ecchi/harem genre anime usually fail to provide me with that feeling. Clearly, since the main character was so indecisive to begin with he also failed to pick a girl at the end. As I said it’s just a way to appease all fan-base that prefer different girls. Although the character usually will make progress with one of the girls and there’ll be touching moment in the end, overall nothing will change. Nothing, nada, nichts… 24 episodes for nothing. Thanks for wasting my time a**holes.

In conclusion we can see two things: first - you’ve got a lot of patience if you really read through all this and second - avoid of these genre anime as much as possible.

[A-P Originals] My ISP sucks!

Are you satisfied with your ISP (Internet service provider) and what rating would you give your ISP out of 5? Well when it comes to me - I f**king hate my ISP and the rating I would give is 0/5. Besides the fact that speed’s just as fast as dead horse, the main issue is instability.

Most of the time my crap Internet will work just fine, I can play games online without having any lag, I can browse Internet and watch videos with a breeze and not having to worry about bandwidth or anything like that.

But then there are days like today, my Internet works like crap, that is, if we assume that it works at all. During a span of 30 minutes my Internet connection disappeared at least 20 times. And then it’s back up running after about 6-7 seconds of disappearance. There is no reason for it to disappear, I’d understand if there was a storm outside but the weather is absolutely fine so what reason my ISP company has to not provide me with stable Internet connection that I PAID FOR.

Normally what would a person who’s unsatisfied with his ISP do? Change the ISP right? Well tough luck because it just so happens that this is the only ISP in my local area. Sure there are alternatives such as cellphone internet connection which as far as I know is even worse in terms of stabilty and is expensive as shit. So I’m stuck with this unreliable, unstable, all around crap ISP just because it’s the best one (more like only one) available in my area...

My recent conversations with some of my online friends have made me think. Is anime more accepted in foreign countries such as US and UK than in my small Eastern-European country?

I've been watching anime ever since I was 13. Sure I watched anime on TV when I was 7 or so but me and everyone around just considered them cartoons. But when I was 13 years old I truly discovered the world of anime and started watching it online while at the same time thinking: 'Is this normal?' I always was so paranoid about someone coming in my room or seeing my computer's monitor through window. In fact I still am. Now, I simply wait until everyone goes to bed and I make sure to close blinds so no one sees it through window and only then start watching anime.

It just seems that society in my country can't accept a teen or older to watch animation other than South Park. It's considered childish or even sick. At school I don't have to hide that I play video games, everyone knows it and plays games themselves. I can't say the same thing for anime though.
One of my best friends watches anime himself. He once unintentionally told me that he watches some stuff and at the end of conversation I realized that he likes anime and doesn't consider them as cartoons. He's the only real-life person that is fully aware about my hobby, however, we never discuss anime unless no one's around. I'm pretty sure that some of my closest friends know that we both watch anime and don't mind it, just never mentions it. One of them DID mention it once, asking why our YouTube avatars are from Japanese cartoons and that lead to awkward silence until me and my friend pretended not to understand what's the question about and straight-up ignored it.

I'm just wondering how many people have to go through this. How many people are hiding their hobby and only feel safe to discuss anime online with people from different countries that they've never met before?

[A-P Originals] Quality of User Reviews

Note: This is an unaltered blog originally written for Anime-Planet. Originally published in July 23rd, 2011.

_________________________________________________________________________________

So I've been around this site for almost a year and it has become a great source to not only keep track of anime I've already watched but also a good way to found new anime to watch based on recommendations and annotations.

That being said it's often hard for me to decide whether I'll like the anime or not based only on annotations. That's where the reviews kick in and I usually like to read at least 2 or 3 reviews before adding anime to my 'Want to Watch' list. Also not all anime have Official Site Reviews so it's nice having User Reviews section.
I don't want to offend or pick on anyone but it's just my personal opinions about user review quality around this site and my own preferences.

Generally, there are 4 types of user reviews that I've noticed:

1) One or two lines of text - It's not a review but an opinion. Although rather rare lately, I've seen plenty of 'reviews' that have about 2 lines of text and really don't help me decide whether I'll like anime or not.

2) Subjective reviews - I absolutely hate these. These are opinions and not reviews. The writing style depends on author. Some of these reviews consist of only 2 lines of text, paragraphs or even the actual format of Site Reviews*. I find them unhelpful and I made a separate blog where I express my take on these reviews.

3) Reviews that don't follow the site review format* - overall, I don't mind these as long as they don't fall into 1st and/or 2nd type. It's made clear that user doesn't have to follow the official site review format. These kinds of reviews usually consist of one or few paragraphs and overall are helpful and easy to read. There are plenty of good reviews like that around and even though they tend to not fully explain the scores given there are a plenty of objective reviews with this free-style format.

4) Reviews that follow the site review format* - my favorite type just because it makes a review to look more professional and easier to follow. Usually people who like to use this format try to give rather objective opinions and tend to explain their given scores. This is the format I follow writing my own reviews. Unfortunately, there are quite a few user reviewers that do follow the format and yet are incredibly subjective (2nd type).

*Site review format - basically each category is divided from each other by a paragraph. So in one paragraph author gives his thoughts on Sound, next one on Animation and so on.

[A-P Originals] Subjective reviews

Note: This is an unaltered blog originally written for Anime-Planet. Originally published in July 23rd, 2011.
The information/opinions may or may not be outdated and nothing has been edited compared to the original version.
_________________________________________________________________________________

We all know that reviews are a balance of opinions and facts - they're not 100% objective or 100% subjective. I usually try to stay on objective side whenever I'm writing a review but I'll inevitably going to have an opinion that some people won't agree with. I am very open-minded for other people views as long as they use facts to back up their opinions.

However there are some people that just give anime a horrible or excellent score based on their own opinion.

EXAMPLE: Highschool of the Dead review (based on 2 out of 12 episodes watched)

It had a great plot and I loved the style and the idea but...

WAY TO PERVY! At least for me I don't want to have to see up a girls skirt or boobs jigle for no reason what so ever. Big turn off for me.

Scores were...

  • Story 8/10
  • Animation 9/10
  • Sound 7/10
  • Characters 4/10
  • Overall 3/10

Ok, I'll admit that all scores except Overall were reasonable but Overall score 3? Are you kidding me? Yes, I do understand that you personally didn't like the ecchi aspect of that anime (even though its genre tags clearly say ecchi) and you dropped it because of it but the actual anime itself does not deserve 3. Some people might even like ecchi or not care about ecchi at all (like me) so the anime gets overall low score purely based on your own taste.

EXAMPLE 2: Neon Genesis Evangelion - The End of Evangelion review (based on full movie watched)

EPICNESS ANIMATED, that's the only way you have to describe such an opera. I liked this movie as hell and even if i was one of the few who liked the end of the serie i still think the one showed in this movie is the true end of evangelion plot.

Scores were...

  • Story N/A
  • Animation N/A
  • Sound N/A
  • Characters N/A
  • Overall 10/10

I consider it to be an opinion and not a review. It gets 10 out of 10 just because the author loved it. That's it.
I tend to avoid to review anime that I personally love or hate, for example, I love Death Note and I've gave it 5/5 stars but if I'd review it I would not give 10/10 because it has flaws and is by no means perfect. I try to review anime based on facts and not my personal preference.

[A-P Originals] Ratings in my Anime Reviews

_________________________________________________________________________________

This blog is about ratings I use in my anime reviews and I mostly guide myself by these criteria, however, keep in mind that nothing’s set in stone and I sometimes may take some liberties as well.
Each category (Story, Animation, Sound, and Characters) receives its respective rating based on these descriptions.

‘Overall’ category doesn’t necessarily have to meet the description.

10 - Excellent/Perfect – in order to receive this rating not only the anime has to be flawless but also need to blow my mind in the respective category. I doubt that I’ll ever give out a 10.

9 – Amazing – the anime has to be flawless in the respective category (e.g.  Sound)

8 – Great – is better than 'Good' but with some minor flaws that overall don’t ruin the experience

7 – Good – the anime is good, however, lacks something and/or has flaws

6 - Almost good – has some mistakes that don’t leave ‘Good’ impression (Pun intended)

6 - Above average – it has certain qualities that distinguishes it from other million anime at the same genre, however, is not interesting or original enough to deserve 7

5 - Average/Mediocre - isn’t bad but simply lacks originality that would make it any different from millions of other anime

4 - Decent/Bearable/Below average – is watchable, however, leaves bad impression or no impression at all.

3 – Bad – lacks quality, is poorly made together, feels rushed

2 – Horrible – is a waste of money and shouldn’t have been made.

1 - God awful abomination/Doesn’t deserve a title of 'Anime' – I doubt that anything will ever receive this, the only way to receive score of 1 is lack of context, sense and has no quality

Note: Rating 6 has two meanings and anime can recieve 6 if either or both of them applies

I just watched Mirai Nikki a.k.a. Future Diary OVA (which is sadly only 9 minutes long) and I have to say it looks awesome. I know there's going to be Mirai Nikki TV anime with actual episodes as this OVA simply felt like a teaser.

Can't wait until the actual anime which ought to start airing this year's fall so I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Meantime, it's almoust summer break so I will start reading Mirai Nikki manga when I'll find free time.

I recommend to check the series if you're into suspense and high-stakes games. Reminded Eden of the East a bit :P

As much as I enjoyed action, characters, animation, jokes and story of Bleach I'm dropping it. Fillers can ruin any anime and I'm also getting a feeling that this anime will never end. The main problem with Bleach is the same irritating formula used again and again.

The formula is: An enemy which is a lot stronger than Ichigo, Ichigo is stubborn so he won't give up, he gets nearly killed or severely injured, he gets stronger, he defeats the enemy, move on to the next enemy, repeat the circle.

I might continue watching Bleach once it ends but I won't watch a never ending anime.

I've tried writing anime reviews and I seem to like it. So I'll continue writing reviews from now on but I just wish I could re-watch some of my favourite anime so I could properly review them. Unfortunately, I have more anime on my hands to watch that I can bear at the moment so I doubt I'll be re-watching the favourites like Death Note any time soon.

As for reviews themselves - I'll try to be as objective and informative as possible. English is not my native language so please excuse any spelling and grammar mistakes that could sneak into my reviews :D

If you have any suggestions for me then feel free to share.

Hey guys, I uploaded a new video! After all it's only been 2 years since my last upload :3 As always, I'm super quick to updating my blog... But don't worry, because the footage is only 3 years old and it was recorded using the in-game video recording/sharing feature hence why the quality is so poor.
